Championed by visionary mayor Kotoku Wamura and completed in 1984, the colossal Fudai Floodgate was initially ridiculed for decades as an extravagant and unnecessary project. That perception changed dramatically during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, when the massive barrier absorbed the brunt of ferocious 66-foot waves, saving the village from devastation. Today, travelers visiting the rugged Sanriku Coast can marvel at this monumental feat of coastal engineering and visit the nearby memorial dedicated to Wamura's enduring legacy.
