Perched atop the sweeping peaks of Mount Takachiho, Ame no Sakahoko is a mysterious 'upturned sky-spear' steeped in centuries of Shinto mythology. Legend says it was driven into the mountain by the gods to bring peace to the realm, remaining undisturbed for generations until the revolutionary samurai Sakamoto Ryōma famously pulled it during his honeymoon. Though damaged by a volcanic eruption in 1913, the embedded spearhead continues to watch over the rugged landscape. Hiking to the summit rewards intrepid travelers with breathtaking volcanic panoramas alongside one of Japan's most evocative relics.
