Rising from the coastal Shimane hillside, the Nima Sand Museum is an eye-catching complex of six futuristic glass-and-steel pyramids designed by architect Shin Takamatsu. Inside the towering central pyramid sits the world's largest functioning hourglass, an enormous timepiece containing one ton of sand calibrated to trickle down over the course of a full year. Visitors can admire sand-based artworks and explore the science behind nearby Kotogahama Beach's rare "singing sands," which squeak when walked upon. It is a mesmerizing tribute to the passage of time and an unforgettable architectural marvel along the Sea of Japan.
