Tracing its roots back to an 869 AD ritual to banish plague, Kyoto's iconic Gion Matsuri reaches its dramatic peak during the Yamaboko Junko float procession each July. Teams of up to a hundred men in traditional attire haul multi-ton, nail-free wooden floats draped in centuries-old tapestries through the city's historic avenues. Spectators can witness master pullers pivot the massive structures around tight street corners using wooden wedges and rhythmic chants. In the evenings leading up to the grand parade, the festival comes alive with glowing lanterns and the melodic chime of traditional Gion-bayashi flute and bell music.
