Dating back over 500 years to the early Muromachi period, the historic tousu at Tofuku-ji Temple holds the distinction of being Japan's oldest surviving communal latrine. In Zen monastic tradition, every aspect of daily life served as spiritual training, requiring monks to use the facilities under strict rules of silence and ritual etiquette. Today, this remarkably preserved wooden structure is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Though no longer operational, visitors can peer inside to appreciate an unexpected and fascinating facet of medieval Japanese monastic architecture.
