Dating back to the Muromachi period, Ryoan-ji Temple is celebrated worldwide for hosting Japan's most iconic karesansui dry landscape garden. Fifteen carefully arranged stones rest on beds of raked white gravel, cleverly positioned so that you can never view all of them simultaneously from any vantage point. Visitors flock here to sit quietly on the wooden veranda, pondering the centuries-old mystery of the garden's unknown designer. Beyond the rock garden, the temple grounds also feature serene walking paths around a sprawling pond, making it a peaceful retreat steeped in Zen culture.
