Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a brilliant 9th-century scholar and politician deified as the patron god of learning. Students from all across Japan flock here to pray for academic success, rubbing the shrine's famous bronze cow statues for good fortune. Beyond its rich spiritual history, the expansive grounds feature hundreds of blossoming plum trees and host a bustling open-air antique and flea market on the 25th of every month. It remains one of Kyoto's most culturally significant and atmospheric Shinto landmarks.
