With a history stretching back over 1,300 years, Kifune Shrine sits enveloped in the tranquil mountain woods of Kibune and is dedicated to Taka-okami-no-kami, the Shinto deity of water. The sacred grounds are celebrated as the birthplace of ema wooden prayer plaques, as well as the setting for fascinating legends ranging from medieval curses to ancient rain rituals. Visitors can follow a scenic pilgrimage path connecting the main shrine, the rear Okunomiya, and the middle Yui no Yashiro shrine along the rushing river. Framed by brilliant autumn maples or fresh summer greenery, the iconic lantern-flanked stone staircase offers one of the most enchanting sights in Japan.
