Established over a thousand years ago outside Imamiya Shrine, Ichimonjiya Wasuke (familiarly known as Ichiwa) is celebrated as one of the world's oldest continuously operating eateries. Guests are welcomed into a charming wooden compound that dates in part back to the 17th century, complete with a tranquil courtyard garden. The menu features only one perfected specialty: bite-sized rice cakes dusted with roasted soybean flour, crisped over open coals on bamboo skewers, and brushed with a savory-sweet white miso glaze. Still lovingly prepared by direct descendants of the original founding family, it offers a truly timeless taste of Japanese culinary history.
