Spanning the Hori River since 794, Ichijo Modoribashi—the 'Bridge of Return'—is one of Kyoto's most myth-laden landmarks. It is celebrated in Japanese lore as the site of a miraculous revival of a dead scholar, a legendary duel between a samurai and a severed-armed demoness, and the hiding spot of sorcerer Abe no Seimei's spirit familiars. The bridge's name also gave rise to lasting superstitions, making it a place avoided by newlyweds yet sought out by soldiers hoping for a safe return home. Today, visitors can cross the modern span or visit nearby Seimei Shrine to view remnants of the historic previous structure and immerse themselves in the city's mystical past.
