Nestled just west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Go'o Shrine honors the 8th-century noble Wake no Kiyomaro, whose injured leg was said to be miraculously healed after he was protected by a herd of 300 wild boars. Instead of the typical lion-dog guardians, spirited stone boars stand sentinel over the grounds alongside hundreds of other boar-themed statues and talismans. Today, athletes, travelers, and locals visit to pray for leg and foot health, even rubbing sacred stone footprints to seek relief from injuries.
