Often hailed as the 'Venice of Japan,' the coastal hamlet of Ine is defined by roughly 230 traditional wooden boathouses lining the curve of its tranquil bay. Dating back to the 1700s, these unique two-story funaya feature water-level docks where fishing boats park directly inside, with living quarters perched above. Visitors can marvel at the scenic interplay of mountains and turquoise sea aboard a sightseeing ferry, or stay overnight in a converted boathouse to fall asleep to the gentle lap of the tide. It remains one of Japan's most picturesque and wonderfully preserved maritime communities.
