Founded in 811 by the revered monk Kūkai and later transformed into a Pure Land sanctuary by Hōnen, Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is one of Kyoto's most evocative spiritual sites. The temple grounds are filled with roughly 8,000 stone Buddha statues and pagodas, gathered from ancient unmarked graves and arranged into a striking, meditative landscape. Visitors can also wander through a serene, intimate bamboo path that feels far removed from the bustle of central Arashiyama.
