Winding along a hillside in northern Kyushu, Tonkararin is a baffling subterranean complex spanning nearly 450 meters of mysterious stonework. Passages range from soaring four-meter-high vaulted corridors to shafts so narrow they can only be navigated on hands and knees, built with unique dry-stone techniques rarely seen in Japan. No one knows definitively who constructed the tunnels or what sacred or practical purpose they served, fueling decades of archaeological fascination. Visitors can wander the atmospheric grounds, exploring nearby ancient burial mounds downhill and an ornate hillside shrine perched just above the tunnel exit.
