Built in 1607 by the famed warlord Kato Kiyomasa, Kumamoto Castle is celebrated as one of the most complete and impressive historic strongholds in Japan. Although the historic landmark suffered extensive damage during the powerful 2016 earthquakes, its resilient silhouette inspired the local community and spurred an ambitious, painstaking reconstruction effort.
