Standing proudly on the grounds of Jisso-ji Temple, the Yamataka Jindai Zakura is an ancient Edo-higan cherry tree estimated to be between 1,800 and 2,000 years old. Honored as one of the Three Great Cherry Trees of Japan and the nation's very first designated National Natural Monument, it carries millennia of history and folklore. Each spring, its weathered, sprawling branches burst into delicate pink blossoms, creating a breathtaking contrast with the surrounding fields of bright yellow daffodils. Visitors can also marvel at a nearby 'space cherry tree,' grown from seeds sent to orbit on the International Space Station before returning to take root beside its ancient ancestor.
