Nestled on the uppermost floor of Himeji Castle's main keep lies a sacred altar dedicated to Osakabehime, an elusive spirit and folklore figure believed to protect the fortress from ruin. Legend holds that this misanthropic entity, alternately depicted as a shape-shifting kitsune or a wronged courtesan, revealed her prophecies of the castle's fate to the lord only once a year. After past attempts to relocate the shrine supposedly triggered waves of misfortune, it was firmly reinstated within the castle walls, where it continues to receive offerings today. Travelers who climb to the top of Japan's most famous castle can pay their respects to this legendary guardian while admiring panoramic views of the surrounding city.
