Tower of Wind

Yusaku Matsui via Google Maps

Emerging from the waters of Tokyo Bay like a pair of futuristic sails, the Tower of Wind (Kaze no Tō) is a striking architectural marvel conceived by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito. While its dramatic silhouette has sparked playful rumors of secret lairs, the structure ingeniously harnesses maritime breezes to ventilate the massive undersea automotive tunnel below. Although the artificial island itself is off-limits to foot traffic, it offers a captivating sight from viewpoints along the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line or through the window of a flight descending into Haneda Airport.
