Constructed in 1232 to protect medieval trading vessels in the treacherous shallows of Sagami Bay, Wakae Island stands as the oldest surviving artificial port in Japan. Once a bustling maritime gateway welcoming merchant ships laden with prized Chinese ceramics, the stone harbor remained active for centuries before eventually being surrendered to the tides in the late Edo period. Today, this registered National Historic Site rests just off Zaimokuza Beach, where visitors can gaze across the water or walk directly onto the ancient stone ruins during low tide.
