Founded in 1285 by the wife of regent Hojo Tokimune, Tokeiji Temple famously served for centuries as a rare sanctuary where abused women could seek refuge and legally dissolve their marriages. Today, this tranquil branch of the nearby Engakuji school belongs to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism and offers visitors a deeply reflective, quiet atmosphere. Because photography is prohibited across the temple grounds, travelers are encouraged to put away their devices and immerse themselves fully in the lush, meditative surroundings and remarkable heritage.
