Located in the on-site Kannon Museum at Kamakura's famous Hase-dera Temple, this striking Muromachi-period statuary brings the 33 sacred manifestations of Avalokiteśvara (Kannon) vividly to life. Each intricately carved, polychrome figure showcases the goddess transcending gender, age, and form to rescue human souls, ranging from regal figures to mythical entities like the half-bird Karura and six-armed Ashura. While complete sets of these avatars are exceedingly rare in Japan due to centuries of loss, Hase-dera’s collection survives completely intact.
