Steeped in ancient Shinto folklore, Ryuko-Myojin Shrine is the only sanctuary in Japan dedicated to Gozuryu-Okami, a once-fearsome five-headed dragon deity who reformed his destructive ways after falling in love with the goddess Benzaiten. Originally established in 552 CE and later relocated to sit atop the dragon's mythical belly, the peaceful grounds look out toward Enoshima, where the dragon's divine consort remains enshrined. Travelers can wander the tranquil precincts and immerse themselves in one of the region's most captivating legendary love stories.
