From 1934 to 1962, the historic seaside town of Kamakura hosted a raucous annual summer carnival complete with massive parades, beauty pageants, clowns, and costumed martians. In 1989, renowned manga artist Ryūichi Yokoyama commemorated this forgotten tradition with a colorful, cartoonish mural installed in the bustling underpass linking Kamakura Station to Komachi-dōri.
