Secluded in the forested eastern hills of Kamakura, Hokokuji is a peaceful Rinzai Zen temple originally founded during the early Muromachi Period as a family temple for the Ashikaga and Uesugi clans. Today, the temple is most celebrated for its mesmerizing grove of towering bamboo stalks, threaded with tranquil stone pathways and weathered stone lanterns. Visitors can stroll beneath the emerald canopy to an open-air teahouse nestled in the grove, where you can savor freshly whisked matcha while listening to the rustling breeze. It remains one of Kamakura's most atmospheric and meditative retreats.
