Dating back to the eighth century, this storied Jodo-sect temple is famous for housing one of the largest gilded wooden sculptures in Japan—a breathtaking 9.18-meter-tall statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Legend tells that the statue was carved from the same sacred camphor tree as its sister icon in Nara before washing ashore here in 736. Visitors can stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens, explore temple halls, and take in panoramic views sweeping over the city and the ocean. It remains one of the most culturally enriching and scenic sanctuary stops in the region.
