Founded between 1688 and 1703 along the path to Goryo Shrine, Chikaramochiya is the oldest surviving confectionery shop in Kamakura. Its signature treat is Gongorō-chikaramochi—freshly pounded mochi enveloped in smooth sweet red bean paste, prepared from an Edo-era recipe in tribute to a fearless 11th-century warrior. Visitors can also sample seasonal mugwort varieties, long-lasting gyūhi sweets, and whimsical fukumen-manjū shaped like ritual festival masks. Handcrafted entirely without additives, these confections offer an authentic, bite-sized taste of local history.
