Carved deep into the soft cliff faces of Kamakura's northern hills, the Hyakuhachi Yagura—or 108 Grotto Tombs—forms an evocative medieval troglodyte cemetery. Despite its name, which draws from Buddhist numerology, the site actually contains nearly two hundred cave tombs holding weathered funerary pagodas and headless Buddhist statuettes. The haunting, moss-draped caverns feel forgotten by time, steeped in local lore ranging from superstitious turn-of-the-century gamblers to modern ghost legends. Reached via the scenic Ten-en hiking trail, it offers an offbeat, atmospheric glimpse into the spiritual burial traditions of feudal Japan.
