Set against the dramatic volcanic backdrop of Sakurajima in Akamizu Observation Square, Portrait of a Shout is a monumental tribute to iconic Japanese singer-songwriter Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi. Carved by artist Hiroshi Onari from massive blocks of local volcanic stone, the 3.4-meter-tall sculpture depicts a passionate figure howling toward the heavens alongside guitars jutting from the rock. It permanently marks the site where 75,000 fans gathered for an epic dusk-to-dawn concert in 2004 that echoed across Kagoshima Bay. Today, travelers can stroll along nearby coastal lava fields and take in sweeping bay views while marveling at this uniquely raw piece of Japanese music history.
