Deai-sugi Cedar Tree

Serving as Kagoshima-Chūō Station's iconic rendezvous point, the Deai-sugi—or 'Encounter Cedar'—is an awe-inspiring relic of Japan's ancient wilderness. The massive trunk is an authentic Yakusugi cedar estimated to be over 3,000 years old, gifted to the station from the mystical forests of nearby Yakushima island. Though its upper half was harvested during the Edo period, the preserved lower trunk now stands surrounded by benches outside the West Exit. It offers travelers a rare chance to touch millennia of natural history right in the bustling heart of the city.
