Known as the Wedded Rocks, Meoto Iwa consists of two sacred sea stacks that represent the creator deities Izanagi and Izanami in Shinto belief. The larger and smaller stones are eternally linked by a heavy shimenawa rope made of braided rice straw, which weighs over a ton and is ceremonially replaced three times a year. Perched near the historic Futami Okitama Shrine, the site is also famous for its frog statues, which serve as charms for safe returns. Visiting at sunrise offers an enchanting view as the morning light breaks directly between the paired rocks.
