Moto-Hakone Stone Buddhas

Fred Cherrygarden via Google Maps

Dating back to the Kamakura period, this atmospheric collection of 30 medieval stone carvings stands as a testament to the region's spiritual heritage. Chiseled into volcanic cliffs to deliver travelers through Hakone's once-treacherous pass, the site features the towering 10.5-foot Rokudō Jizō alongside weathered roadside bodhisattvas. Visitors can also discover ancient funerary pagodas steeped in folklore, including monuments linked to the legendary Soga brothers and the immortal nun Yao-Bikuni. It makes for an evocative and serene historic stop nestled along the mountain route.
