Rising 1,816 meters above the Aizu region, Mount Bandai is celebrated as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Once dubbed 'Aizu-Fuji' for its near-perfect cone, a massive eruption in 1888 collapsed its northern flank, carving rugged caldera cliffs and giving birth to the scenic lake district of Urabandai behind it. Today, the peak offers spectacular hiking trails with sweeping views over Aizu-Wakamatsu and Lake Inawashiro, drawing outdoor enthusiasts in every season.
