Saruhashi Bridge

Ryousuke Futami via Google Maps

Renowned as the "Monkey Bridge," Saruhashi arches over a breathtaking ravine using a rare hanebashi cantilever design anchored directly into opposing cliff faces. Local folklore tells of a 7th-century gardener who built the original crossing after witnessing monkeys link their bodies to span the chasm, creating a landmark that later enchanted Edo-period travelers along the Kōshū Kaidō route. Today, visitors can marvel at its striking historic engineering while taking in stunning views of the surrounding canyon and rushing river below.
