Tucked amid modern urban streets, Yawata no Yabushirazu is one of Japan’s most legendary and mysterious sacred sites. Fenced off and strictly forbidden to enter since the Edo period, this diminutive bamboo thicket inspired an enduring Japanese idiom for hopelessly losing one's way. Local folklore attributes the taboo to vengeful samurai spirits, mischievous kitsune, or supernatural vanishings known as kamikakushi. Today, visitors can peer past the perimeter fence and pay respects at the small roadside hokora shrine while contemplating the enigmatic aura of this impenetrable grove.
