Tobinodai Shell Midden

Mitsuhiro via Google Maps

Uncovered in the 20th century, this ancient settlement offers an intimate window into Neolithic Japanese life, having revealed thousands of artifacts, pottery vessels, and Japan's first documented prehistoric hearth-pit. Visitors can marvel at the life-sized reconstruction of an ancient Jōmon dog affectionately known as Tobimaru, ponder a replica of two mysterious prehistoric skeletons locked in an embrace, and admire uniquely sculpted earthenware handles. The on-site museum also pairs these ancient treasures with contemporary Jōmon-inspired art, beautifully bridging millennia of human creativity.
