Mount Osore

前田和夫 via Google Maps

Nestled in the volcanic caldera of northern Aomori, Mount Osore (literally 'Fear Mountain') is revered as one of Japan's three most sacred destinations and a mythological gateway to the afterlife. Visitors walk through an eerie expanse of steaming sulfurous rock, bubbling pits, and shores adorned with colorful pinwheels left by grieving parents for departed souls. The grounds are anchored by Bodai-ji Temple, which offers temple lodgings and rejuvenating onsen waters fed directly by volcanic springs. Every July, blind mediums known as Itako gather here during the temple festival to channel the spirits of the dead, creating an unforgettable and deeply moving pilgrimage experience.
