Created in the late 19th century by a Zen Buddhist priest to honor fishermen lost at sea, Jūroku Rakan Iwa features 22 sacred figures etched into weathered seaside basalt. Visitors can wander the wave-lashed shore just a short walk from Fukura Station to discover depictions of Shakyamuni, Avalokitesvara, and the revered Arhats facing the open water. The atmosphere is both spiritual and dramatic, offering a peaceful communion between traditional devotion and raw coastal scenery. Visit in late July to witness an enchanting evening ceremony when the historic carvings are dramatically illuminated against the night tide.
